Learner permits could be reduced from 12 to 6 months and cost more under new proposals to curb driving test dodging

Those who actively renew their learner permit without taking their test could be potentially forced to undertake their driving test under new proposals suggested by the RSA.

Under the new proposals those who have failed to take their test despite repeatedly renewing their learners permit, will be charged more for their renewal and will be given a permit that lasts only six months.

Speaking to RTÉ’s Today with Miriam O’Callaghan, RSA Chief Executive Moyagh Murdock said the new proposals are being submitted to the Department of Transport in an effort to stop people dodging their test.

Ms Murdock, who stated that waiting lists have been reduced to an average of eight weeks around the country, also told the programme that the issue which has become a culture of sorts needs to be addressed as it is frustrating that people who are actively holding up the system for others who genuinely want to do their test.

Although any proposals have yet to be passed, it is being considered that the fee for a 4th or subsequent learner permit should be increased from €35 to €50.

Meanwhile the overall length of that permit will be reduced from twelve months to just six months.
