A new Leaving Cert subject, ‘Politics and Society’, was officially announced yesterday by Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan.

The new subject will be taught to fifth year students in over 40 schools participating in the pilot scheme, and will be offered both at higher and ordinary level with both a written exam and a citizen project to account for the marks. The written exam will represent 80 per cent of the points, while the project will account for the final 20 percent of the final grade. The first points will be awarded in 2018.
Minister O’ Sullivan said that Politics and Society will “develop skills of critical thinking, and engaging with how what everybody does has an effect on others”.
