Looming strike action by nurses likely to be called off after marathon talks

Nurses across seven hospitals nationwide were due to stage work stoppages this Thursday, after an scandalous worsening of the overcrowding crisis.

However, the stoppages are now likely not to go ahead, after discussions held between the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) appear to have yielded an agreement.

Nurses had served notice of industrial action after they felt that HSE management had not fulfilled its promises to introduce agreed measures to alleviate the critical levels of overcrowding seen in recent times.

Talks began at the Workplace Relations Commission on Saturday, with the goal of ensuring these measures were indeed adhered to on a consistent basis.

INMO General Secretary, Liam Doran, will now examine the new proposals agreed, and it is understood the strike action is likely to be called off for now.
