A lunch menu from the Titanic has been auctioned for $88,000 (€79,000) in New York. The menu was saved by a first class passenger who survived the sinking of the ship.
The owner, Abraham Lincoln Salomon survived historical disaster by boarding a lifeboat which rowed away instead of rescueing more people. The crew were said to have been bribed.
Available on the menu are the likes of Chicken a la Maryland, Virginia Ham and Soused Herrings. The menu is signed on the back in pencil by first-class passenger Isaac Gerald Frauenthal, who escaped on another lifeboat. The menu is from 14 April 1912, the day ill-fated ship hit an iceberg. It is thought the two men enjoyed lunch together that day.
The identity of the buyers has not been disclosed.
