A man in his 30s is due in court in Dublin next month in connection with the theft of a truck which was driven into a GAA grounds during nursery and juvenile training sessions last weekend, according to RTE.
The truck, which had a mini digger on the back, was stolen from a nearby building site on Botanic Avenue on Saturday morning, RTE reports.
It was then driven into the grounds of Na Fianna in Glasnevin at around 11am, just as the nursery sessions for young children were ending.
Na Fianna is one of hundreds of clubs all over the country which hosts nursery and juvenile training sessions on Saturday mornings for children aged four to 12.
The theft was spotted by a motorist and a motorcyclist. It is believed the driver drove the truck into Na Fianna’s grounds to try to get away.
The truck then crashed into the side of a parked car, scraping the doors and removing the wing and wing mirror before the driver jumped out while the truck was still moving.
It continued to roll into another parked car while the driver tried to escape into the grounds of the adjoining Scoil ChaitrÃona.
He then apparently tried to steal a bicycle but was spotted by a group of parents, two of whom were off-duty gardaÃ.
He was pursued across the GAA fields, through Griffith Park—a public park—before the off-duty gardaà caught him on Drumcondra Road near Fagan’s pub, around 1.5km away.
Gardaà say a man was arrested and has since been charged with stealing a truck and the theft of a bicycle, reports RTE.
He is due to appear before Dublin District Court on 4 December.
A spokesperson for Na Fianna GAA club said they were relieved that no one, particularly none of the young children, was hurt during the incident and stressed that the nursery and juvenile training sessions will continue next week.
