In the wake of a deadly hit-and-run event that occurred in County Limerick over the weekend, gardaĆ have detained a man in his 40s, reports RTE.
Shortly after noon on Saturday, 21-year-old Marguerita Sheridan was hit by a vehicle at Bank Place in Rathkeale.
The motorist left the area without offering to aid her or calling for help from emergency services, reports RTE.
After being brought to University Hospital Limerick, Ms. Sheridan passed away there.
The individual who was apprehended is being detained at a Limerick County garda station, reports RTE.
“It would be an understatement for me to say that the entire community is really deeply saddened by what has happened to Marguerita, particularly given the time of year,” he said, reports RTE.
He went on to say that Ms. Sheridan and her family had been residents of Rathkeale for many generations and were well-known there.
“I suppose again, Rathkeale and the wider community of Rathkeale finds itself plunged into the news cycle for all the wrong reasons,” said Mr Collins, reports RTE.
“I’m afraid that the incident will cause tension in Rathkeale,” the TD remarked.
“I would appeal for calm to everybody. Tensions have been heightened since this awful event on Saturday, there is no doubt about that,” he said, reports RTE.
