Man gets jailed after claiming his late parents’ pensions for over 33 years




A 59-yr-old man who is claiming more than €500,000 in pensions for his deceased parents has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison, the last year of which was suspended.

According to RTE, Don O’Callaghan, of Churchfield Green, Churchfield in Cork City, was convicted in Cork Circuit Criminal Court today after pleading guilty to 73 counts of theft and forgery totalling €527,000 over 33 years since 1987.

Judge Helen Boyle said the premeditated actions of robbing money from the state’s coffers from people who genuinely needed that money as protection.

The national broadcaster said that O’Callaghan had a chronic gambling addiction, Judge Boyle said that despite the large amount of money he earned, he actually gambled every day.

When sentencing O’Callaghan, he said the crime was at the high end of the scale in terms of the amount of money stolen.
