An American who was convicted of murder in 2003 spent nearly two decades in jail before his identical twin confessed to the crime and the jailed man was released.

According to Sky News, NBC Chicago and the Chicago Tribune, Kevin Dugar was sentenced to 54 years in prison in 2005 when he was involved in a gang-relating crime and convicted of killing Antwan Carter and wounding Ronnie Bolden.

It looked as if he would spend most of his life in jail until his twin brother, Karl Smith, wrote to him in 2013, saying that he had in fact murdered Mr. Carter.  The twins have different surnames as Smith took his mother’s name.

While it may have appeared that Dugar would have been released immediately, things were not so simple.  It was ruled in 2018 that Smith’s confession was not credible and that the fact that he was already serving a sentence for 99 years for his involvement in a home invasion that led to a child being shot in the head meant he had little to lose for taking responsibility for the crime.

However, Dugar’s conviction was finally overturned in 2021 and he was released with the proviso that he could be tried again in the future.
