Simon Coveney says he hopes a report on Ireland’s defence forces will be ready in the next two weeks

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said that he expects a report to be brought in the next two weeks which will consider the Defence Force’s ability to defend Ireland.

According to RTE, the news comes on the back of the delicate situation over the past few days when Russia had planned to carry out naval military exercises.  Thanks to the successful and calm approach of the Irish South and West Fish Producer’s Organisation, the Russian ambassador announced that the exercises would be moved to a different location so that they would not interfere with Irish fishing.

Some social media users have expressed surprise that Coveney would announce this report on Ireland’s defence forces, particularly as it is very clear that the diplomatic approach of the fishing organisation was exactly what was needed when dealing with the Russians.  Many are saying that Coveney should brush up on his own diplomacy skills rather than jumping to a discussion on the country’s defence forces and they have also pointed to the fact that Ireland remains a neutral country.
