In an astonishing case that shows how the New Zealand government has lost the plot over Covid, a female reporter was taken in to Afghanistan by the Taliban government when her home country refused to accept her return due to their restrictions.

According to RT.com, Charlotte Bellis left Afghanistan for Belgium when she discovered that she as pregnant as the Taliban do not allow unmarried, pregnant women to stay in the country.  She was then unable to stay there due to visa problems.

Unable to get past the severe Covid procedure for coming into New Zealand, Ms. Bellis had no choice but to go back to the Taliban and ask its leaders to allow her back into the country.  In an article for the New Zealand Herald, she wrote about how she met with senior Taliban contacts, asking if there would be any problem if she returned to Qatar with her partner, given that they were not married and she was pregnant.

She was told “No, we’re happy for you, you can come and you won’t have a problem,” the Taliban official is said to have replied.  “Just tell people you’re married and if it escalates, call us.  Don’t worry.  Everything will be fine.”

Reflecting on her treatment by the New Zealand government, Ms. Bellis said “When the Taliban offers you – a pregnant, unmarried woman – safe haven, you know your situation is messed up.”

Ironically, Ms Bellis had attended the first press conference given by the Taliban when they took control the country after the disastrous, overnight withdrawal by American troops under Joe Biden. At the press conference, Ms. Bellis asked the hard-edged question, “What will you do to protect the rights of women and girls?”

It now seems that the same question could be asked of the New Zealand government who are clearly out of control.
