Man who brought his dead uncle into a post office to collect pension says that he thought the man died on the way there

A man who was found with his deceased uncle in a post office has said that he thinks the man may have died on the way there.

According to the Irish Mirror, Declan Haughney (40) explained that the had lived with his uncle, Peadar Doyle, (66) all his life.  He said that he thinks Mr. Doyle may have passed away on the way to the post office in Carlow when they were going to collect the deceased’s man’s pension with another man.

Mr. Haughney explained that his uncle started “dragging his heels” at one point.  He said that he was “walking like normal and the I reckon he died”.

He said he and the other man did not get concerned as Mr. Doyle had been prone to heart attacks in the past.  He also said that when they let him go at the post office counter, he dropped to the floor and they realised then that he had passed away.

Mr. Haughney said that he spent two years in prison for stealing from his aunt and he thinks this is why he is being falsely accused of trying to claim Mr. Doyle’s pension.

It is reported that he said:

“Why would I want to rob my uncle? I’m 40 years of age yeah, I’m not a child, I’m not a young fella. I’m not an eejit to walk into Hoseys with a dead man and collect his money. Am I cuckoo? Am I cuckoo? I’m not.”

According to the Irish Times, the Gardai have started an investigation to try and determine what happened to Mr. Doyle before his body arrived at the post office.  They do not suspect foul play and no-one has been arrested but they want to know what happened.
