Man who missed his court date after falling out of a wheelchair while high on drugs will be sentenced next week

A man who claimed he missed a court date for selling and supplying heroin because of falling out of his wheelchair while using heavy cocaine and benzodiazepines will be sentenced next week, reports Breaking News.

Cork Criminal Circuit Court heard on Tuesday that Paul Marken of Back Lane Hostel, Christchurch Square, The Liberties, Dublin claimed he had previously been taken to hospital when he was due to appear in court.

However, Detective Garda Linda O’Keeffe examined the records at Mercy University Hospital in Cork regarding the admission.

She noted that Mr Marken, 57, sustained injuries the day after his court date.

Mr Marken claimed the hospital record was incorrect. He told Judge Catherine Staines it should be recorded as the day before.

“He fell out of his wheelchair as a result of intoxication with substances including Benzodiazepines and cocaine,” said Detective Garda O’Keeffe, reports Breaking News.

Mr Marken entered a guilty plea on 27 August 2021 to a charge of offering diamorphine for sale or delivery at a time when its street value exceeded €13,000.

Judge Staines remanded Mr Marken in pre-trial custody on Tuesday until he will be heard at Cork Criminal Circuit Court on Thursday, reports Breaking News.
