Micheál Martin praised the ambition of a new draft program for government, which is anticipated to result in the creation of Ireland’s next government, and said that he is “absolutely committed” to serving for three years as taoiseach, reports Breaking News.
Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael had parliamentary party meetings to approve the 162-page program, which was released on Wednesday.
Among the initiatives are additional gardaí, smaller class sizes, and lower childcare expenses, reports Breaking News.
Mr. Martin will continue to serve as Taoiseach until November 16, 2027, according to the government plan that was agreed upon by the two major parties and independent TDs, reports Breaking News.
After then, it will alternate for at least two years under Simon Harris, the head of Fine Gael.
Before a new taoiseach is nominated on Wednesday, it will now be up for approval by the party memberships over the following several days, reports Breaking News.
Mr. Martin expressed his desire to serve as Taoiseach a second time to RTÉ.
He added: “I am absolutely committed to serving out the term because there is an agenda of change and I will work every day of those three years to do what I can to get this programme for government delivered to make life better for people,” reports Breaking News.
The current Tánaiste denied that environmental matters will be given less importance than they were under the previous administration and characterised the government’s proposed agenda as ambitious.
He said: “The programme is as ambitious as the last programme was in respect of the need to address climate change and the challenges of biodiversity,” reports Breaking News.
Mr Martin said: “We have seen progress on housebuilding, but not enough and it needs to be faster. We have got to get the agencies of state and the mechanisms available to the public service to deliver housing faster,” reports Breaking News.
