Martin says he’s ‘horrified’ by ‘unconscionable’ situation in Rafah

“Really horrified” by the situation in Rafah, the Tánaiste has declared that the violence in the area is “unconscionable” and that it must stop.

The UN and Western countries have cautioned that a full-scale attack on Rafah would be a humanitarian disaster. Israel has threatened to launch a big offensive on the city in an attempt to drive out thousands of Hamas fighters it believes are holed up there, reports RTE.

The United States declared yesterday that it was “unacceptable” that border crossings into Gaza were closed.

At the Arbour Hill remembrance gathering in Dublin, Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin expressed his desire for a political solution and ceasefire to be implemented in the Middle East.

“I’m really horrified with what is happening, it’s quite shocking, the level of human suffering, the civilian casualties on a daily basis being occurred by people of Gaza,” he said, reports RTE.

“The taking of the Rafah crossing for example creates huge challenges of getting aid into Gaza. There’s an urgent need for medicines and food to get into people of Gaza,” the Tánaiste said, reports RTE.
