Speaking ahead of the upcoming referendums, Tánaiste Micheál Martin expressed his wish for a “humane and respectful” discussion but also cautioning about the possibility of misinformation swaying voters, reports Breaking News.
On March 8, there will be two votes to change the Constitution.
The first is whether or not the concept of “family” in the Constitution should be amended to include “durable” partnerships in addition to marriage.
The second is whether to remove a statement on women’s roles and responsibilities in the house and insert a new item requiring the government “to strive to support” families’ caregiving efforts.
He said: “The harsh reality is that we have at various points over the years had referendum campaigns which have been distorted by what we today call disinformation,” reports Breaking News.
He said “extreme and invented claims” have often caused public concern, reports Breaking News.
