Mary Lou McDonald apologising for IRA’s assassination of Lord Mountbatten in 1979, describing it as “heartbreaking”

After the funeral service of Prince Philip this weekend, Sinn Fein leader, Mary Lou McDonald apologised for the assassination of Lord Mountbatten by the IRA in 1979 according to MSN.

Prince Philip was the nephew of Lord Mountbatten.

Two other members of Lord Mountbatten’s family, 14 year-old Nicholas Knatchbull, 83 year old Dorothy Brabourne and a local teenager, 14 year old Paul Maxwell were also killed in a boat explosion off the coast of the idyllic Mullaghmore in County Sligo.

McDonald’s comments mark a shift in republican views from her predecessor Mr Adams, who had said Mountbatten ‘knew the danger’ he faced by travelling to the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Adams, when asked about his comments earlier is on the record at saying “I stand over what I said then. I’m not one of those people that engages in revisionism. Thankfully the war is over.”

Many republicans will be raising their eyebrows at McDonald’s apology to the British royal family.
