A historical blizzard has brought the cities of New York and Washington to their knees, leaving thousands without power, disrupting flights, and blanketing their metropolitan areas with a thick layer of snow up to 2ft deep in places.
In fact, the storm now ranks second in severity, just behind an even more intense meteorological event that occurred back in 2006.
13 people are known to have died in car crashes related to the storm across Arkansas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia, while other storm-related casualties took place in Maryland and Virginia.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency, as have ten other state governors on the US’s eastern seaboard.
