Met Eireann warn to ‘brace for it’ as strong winds and heavy rain to batter Ireland this weekend

Ireland is preparing for a spell of unsettled weather this weekend, with forecasts warning of “heavy showers” and “strong winds” as a low-pressure system approaches.

Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather cautioned that Friday’s low-pressure system could bring strong winds along with periods of intense showers, with a possibility of hail and thunderstorms extending into Saturday.

He wrote: “Next low system on Friday bringing strong winds and spells of heavy showers. The worst of the low system will be out in the Atlantic but the weakened low then looks likely to swing back over Ireland for Saturday with risk of some hail and thunderstorms in strong winds,” reports The Mirror.

Wednesday

The day will begin bright in some areas, particularly in the west, with sunny intervals developing as morning mist and cloud gradually clear. It will remain mostly dry, although cloud cover will increase from the Atlantic later in the afternoon, bringing a chance of rain and drizzle to western coastal counties before nightfall. Temperatures will range from 11C to 17C, coolest near Atlantic coasts, with light to moderate southwesterly breezes strengthening and turning southerly in western and northwestern coastal areas by evening.

Cloud will thicken overnight, with rain and drizzle developing along Atlantic coasts and spreading eastwards, followed by clearer spells and scattered showers moving in from the west later. Temperatures will drop to between 3C and 6C, with southwesterly winds increasing from light or moderate to fresh westerly by morning, reports The Mirror.

Thursday

Any lingering rain and drizzle in the east will clear into the Irish Sea early on Thursday, leaving a mix of sunny spells and scattered, blustery showers. Some showers may be heavy, with a chance of hail and thunder, but they will gradually move northeast and become more isolated by evening. It will feel cooler than recent days, with afternoon highs of 8C to 10C and moderate to fresh, gusty westerly winds, strongest near coastal areas.

Friday

Friday is expected to be wet and windy, with gale-force conditions affecting western and northern coasts. There may be heavy, squally bursts of rain, particularly later in the afternoon and evening, reports The Mirror.

Temperatures will reach between 7C and 10C in fresh to strong, gusty southerly winds. Rain, at times heavy and squally, will clear eastwards on Friday night, followed by drier and clearer conditions in many areas overnight as winds turn southwesterly and ease, though they will remain fresh to strong near coasts. Overnight lows will range from 1C to 5C, reports The Mirror.
