The Fianna Fail leader Michael Martin had a phone conversation with Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald on Friday afternoon.
It’s understood that the conversation was cordial but fruitless from a Sinn Fein’s perspective.
The 15 minute conversation saw Martin congratulate McDonald on how well Sinn Fein did in the election but re-emphasized that under no circumstances would Fianna Fail be entering into government with Sinn Fein.
Martin will now formalise a negotiating team to enter talks with Fine Gael and the Green Party in an effort to build a coalition that would keep Sinn Fein out of government.
