A young woman was raped, sexually abused, and unjustly imprisoned by a convicted rapist who had only been in Ireland for a few days. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, reports RTE.
A Central Criminal Court jury earlier this year convicted 41-year-old Randi Gladstone, who is officially from Guyana, guilty of one crime of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of false detention in a vacation complex in County Dublin on August 25, 2023.
He has 19 prior convictions from the UK, including robbery, false imprisonment, abduction, and rape, reports RTE.
Since August of 2023, Gladstone has been under arrest.
“Profound impact on the young woman and her family” was the statement made by Mr. Justice Patrick McGrath as he handed down the punishment, reports RTE.
Her “suffered significant emotional distress and is nervous and anxious when out” is what he wrote.
Judge McGrath stated that Gladstone “preyed on this young vulnerable woman” and concurred with the Director of Public Prosecutions that this offence is punishable by 10 to 15 years in prison, reports RTE.
“This is a very serious offence with a considerable breach of trust. The defendant took advantage of this young woman’s young age, vulnerability and inexperience,” the judge said, reports RTE.
He stated that Gladstone’s conduct “clearly show cunning and planning” and dismissed the defense’s argument that this was opportunistic.
“I cannot ignore the defendant’s appalling previous convictions,” he added, reports RTE.
Judge McGrath noted that Gladstone has no mitigating factors except that he is a foreign national serving time in an Irish prison.
He handed down a ten-year prison sentence and said: “There is no reason to consider suspending any portion of this sentence”.
“I was particularly impressed in the manner in which the young woman gave her evidence and how she and her family approached the case,” the judge added, reports RTE.
Gladstone’s only mitigating element, according to Judge McGrath, is that he is a foreign national incarcerated in Ireland.
Detective Garda The victim, who was 18 at the time, had been residing at the lodging for a few days before the attack, Carol Corrigan informed prosecuting Senior Counsel Patrick Gageby, reports RTE.
Gladstone had spoken to her and her family members. The woman was dictating a message to her companion outside her hotel room on the day in question when he came up to her. When he enquired about her activities and age, she informed him that she was eighteen.
Gladstone requested the lady to enter his room so he could ask her a question, according to what the court heard, reports RTE.
