Minister for Justice says new legislation will allow for “Wet pubs” to safely reopen

The Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has said new legislation to give Gardai greater powers to close pubs who don’t comply with Covid-19 guidelines will allow for so called “wet pubs” to reopen safely.

Speaking to RTE’s Today with Claire Byrne programme, McEntee said the new legislation which is due to be published later this month will allow for pubs that don’t serve food to prepare to reopen.

Under the new legislation Gardai will be given powers to close any pub that fails to comply with guidelines.

The Justice Minister also said the guidelines will include a number of measures for publicans to follow including social distancing, the wearing of visors and table service.

McEntee added that she would like to see all pubs being able to reopen safely and hopes this roadmap will provide clear information and guidance to both publicans and the Gardai.
