Minister for Transport Shane Ross says driving and NCT tests are not likely to return soon

Thousands of motorists across the country face the prospect of being unable to apply for a driving test or NCT as the Minister for Transport Shane Ross has said that tests won’t be returning anytime soon.

Speaking in the Dáil on Wednesday, Minister Ross said that the return of tests will be fairly late in the day.

Ross who has previously confirmed that all expired or expiring licences and certificates will be valid until August was responding to a question put to him by Independent TD Danny Healy Rae who asked when could the Transport Minister envisage tests returning.

Addressing the Dail Healy Rae asked what are the plans regarding tests as many of his constituents are relying on both tests in order to apply for jobs.

However Minister Ross said that the public shouldn’t expect a return to testing soon as it would be impossible to enforce social distancing whilst carrying out both driving and NCT tests.

He added that testing will require guidance from the National Public Health Emergency Team.

The latest developments will now leave a large number of motorists in limbo as the prospect of undertaking a test in the immediate future looking relatively slim.
