According to the former Taoiseach, immigration to Ireland has increased too much in recent years.

Prior to hosting a public debate at the university’s centre for international studies, Mr. Varadkar talked with The Observer, the undergraduate newspaper of the University of Notre Dame, on his visit to the US last week, reports Independent.

Although he cautioned against the growth of populism and prejudice against migrants, he noted that immigration to Ireland was helping the country’s economy and that the rate of immigration is growing too rapidly.

“The majority of people think that the numbers have been too high in recent years, and they’re right,” he said, reports Independent.

“A country of five million people seeing its population rise by 2pc a year, which is what’s happening at the moment, is too fast,” reports Independent.

The leader of the party also took aim at Sinn Féin over remarks made by Pearse Doherty, the spokesman for finance, who claimed that Irish people are being priced out of the rental market by Ukrainian refugees.

The remarks concerned the Accommodation Recognition Payment (ARP), which is exclusively available to Ukrainians and offers them tax-free monthly benefits of €800.
