Money flow problems: Irish Water say they need €2bn in funding to repair water networks over the next four years

It has been revealed today that the state utility Irish Water have said they will need more than €2 billion over the next four years to repair water and wastewater networks across the country.

The latest revelation from the utility who came in for strong criticism in recent weeks after major water leaks in Drogheda and Navan comes after they published a summary which outlines details on how much the company needs to repair the water infrastructure in a number of counties from 2017 to 2021.

According to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland programme who obtained the report, Irish Water say the Government will have to fork out the massive sum in order to prevent situations similar to those in Drogheda occurring again.

Although Irish Water say they are fully committed to maintaining water supplies this year and next year the utility say further funding will be required to carryout routine upgrades from 2019 onwards.

The detailed report also shows that the utility has spent a massive €860 million on water and wastewater projects between 2014 and 2016 already.
