More than 70 dead as 25,000 soldiers to be deployed in the Rainbow Nation of South Africa to crack down on “orgy of looting”, arson, violence and targeted attacks on Indian communities




For anyone who still watches RTE, you may not have been told or seen the scenes of chaos coming out of South Africa in the past week.

More than 70 people have been killed in the unrest, the worst in South Africa for years, and hundreds of businesses wrecked. Food and fuel supplies are running short reports Reuters.

The violence kicked off after the former South African President Jacob Zuma was jailed last week. Zuma failed to appear at a corruption inquiry.

The violence is spread across a number of South African provinces including Zuma’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Shopping malls and warehouses have been ransacked or set ablaze in several cities including Durban and Johannesburg

White Citizens armed with guns blocked off streets to prevent further plundering, in Durban.

Armed Private security firms are patrolling neighbourhoods.
