A woman who beat and tortured her daughter to death before trying to convince authorities her child had died in an accident has been jailed for 48 years.
Sharon Carrillo of Stockton Springs in the US state of Maine subjected her 10-year-old daughter, Marissa Kennedy, to months of daily beatings and abuse before finally succumbed to her injuries in February 2018.
During Carrillo’s trial the court heard how she forced her daughter to kneel on kitchen tiles with her arms raised while she kicked and punched her as well as a hit her with a mop handle and a belt buckle.
Carrillo initially told authorities that her daughter had died after an accident at home, in order to explain her injuries, but a medical examiner determined that little Marissa had suffered ‘battered child syndrome’, with injuries including bleeding to the brain and a lacerated liver.
The medical examiner testified in court that the beatings left the girl with continual stress, injuries, and infections that ultimately caused her heart to “give out”, The Sun reported.
Mrs Carrillo along with her estranged husband Julio Carrillo, were convicted of depraved indifference murder in December. Mr Carrillo was sentenced to 55 years in prison.
