Motorists advised to take extreme care overnight and tomorrow morning as heavy snowfalls hit Ireland

Motorists have been advised to be extremely careful today as meaningful snowfalls hit various counties in the country.

Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford, Louth, Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo are exposed to icy conditions on untreated surfaces with winter rains and some possible accumulations of substantial snow and ice.

The warning lasts until lunchtime.

A yellow wind condition warning has also been issued for Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork and Kerry. It is valid until 2pm today.

Northwest winds associated with Storm Bella will reach speeds of 50km/h to 65km/h with gusts of 90km/h to 110km/h. Winds are stronger in exposed areas and at higher levels.

Met Eireann say that conditions are expected to get worse tonight as temperatures fall below freezing.

Gardai say that heavy snow conditions have left dangerous driving conditions and that people should take extreme care overnight and in the morning if they’re out on the roads.
