Move over Xbox and PlayStation, as Google unveils Stadia, its brand new cloud gaming service

Google has unveiled Stadia, its brand new game streaming service.

Stadia aims to take a large chunk of the gaming pie away from traditional consoles like Xbox and PlayStation, which currently dominate the market.

Stadia is not a device per se. Rather, it is a Netflix-like streaming service for games, which will be accessed through a variety of platforms such as internet browsers, computers, and smartphones. Users will be required to purchase a gaming controller though, which looks pretty much like an Xbox controller.

On the technical side, Google commentators said that Stadia offers games in 60 fps, with HDR and 4K resolution.

Previous game streaming efforts such as OnLive failed due to lag issues, which can be the death knell for any such services, so the success of Stadia remains to be seen. This time around, the service can rely on a robust and widespread server network, unlike OnLive did.

Stadia will be officially launched later this year.
