The biggest solar eclipse since 1999 will hit the world on March 20 next. Nearly 90 percent of the sun’s visible surface will be blocked out in parts of the European continent, bathing the land with an unnatural obscurity.

There are concerns that the eclipse might cause significant concerns to the power grid, since much of the electricity supply in the UK relies on solar power to function.

The event will begin in the UK at 8.45am, and the maximum eclipse, when the moon is nearest the middle of the sun, will happen at 9.31am. The eclipse will end at 10.41am.

The next solar eclipse will occur in 2026.
