Have you managed to get a lockdown haircut since Christmas?
Under level 5 restrictions barbers and hairdressers are prohibited from providing their services. They face hefty fines and even imprisonment if they are caught doing a lockdown haircut.
Till now there’s been anecdotal evidence that lockdown haircuts were taking place around the country as hairdressers and barbers try to keep their customers happy. They may also be claiming the PUP payment whilst working.
But Newtalk has managed to shine a light onto the black market of the lockdown barbers.
They interviewed an anonymous barber based in Dublin who admits to breaking the Level 5 regulations. The barber continues to meet his clients in his barber shop and takes bookings on social media. The barber says he is doing up to eight haircuts a day at the grossly inflated price of €40 a cut. The barber even goes further, admitting he receives government grants and supports.
