A grand jury in Texas has indicted Netflix over its promotion of the movie “Cuties”, a Texas state representative announced on Tuesday.

Republican Texas state Rep. Matt Schaefer announced to the public that a grand jury in Tyler County, Texas, indicted Netflix, Inc., for
“promoting material in Cuties film which depicts lewd exhibition of pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age which appeals to the prurient interest in sex.”

The controversial French film tells the story of an 11-year-old Muslim girl of African heritage joining a group of other girls who dance in a provocative manner while scantly clad. It also features scenes of a sexual nature and one scene of a pre-pubescent girl topless and another in her underwear.

The Texas Senator and the 2016 Republican presidential contender Ted Cruz has led the crusade to bring criminal charges against Netflix, one the board of which sits former US President Barack and his wife Michael Obama.

The film has been decried as promoting child pornography but has been defended online by leftists, academics and media personalities who fawned over the film as “empowering” with some media outlets accusing the far right of launching a conspiracy to demonise the film.

Indeed, others online have said that those who speak out to defend the film should have their computers and devices checked by authorities and their internet histories perused.
