New health Minister off to a great start as almost 600 patients are waiting for hospital beds across Ireland

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) reported that 593 patients were waiting for beds in hospitals across Ireland.

Of these, 387 were in emergency departments, while 206 were situated in wards elsewhere within the hospitals. University Hospital Limerick was identified as having the highest number of patients on trolleys, with 91 individuals waiting for a bed. This was followed by Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Galway, with 79 and 76 patients respectively.

This ongoing issue of hospital overcrowding highlights the strain on Ireland’s healthcare system, particularly in emergency departments. The numbers reflect a significant challenge in providing timely care, underscoring the need for systemic solutions to manage patient influx and improve bed availability.
