New law could ban WhatsApp and Snapchat in Britain

A new law proposed by the British Conservative Party could see apps like WhatsApp and Snapchat banned. Prime Minister David Cameron wants to introduce a law that would prevent the use of digital communications that encrypt information.

The proposal is part of tighter security laws aimed at protecting the country from terrorism. Messaging apps that encrypt data would fall foul of any such law, since it would be impossible for authorities to access information from them without a warrant.

New laws on cyber security will be controversial. A set of laws suggested earlier in the life of the current British government was rejected by the Liberal Democrats, the Conservative’s junior coalition party.
