New paternity leave laws for fathers to come into effect from today

The Government will officially introduce new laws in September that will allow working fathers to take two weeks paid paternity leave.

Under the new laws fathers will be able to request two weeks off meaning they can leave work at any stage, within 26 weeks of the childs birth. It is also understood that Fathers will get paid €230 per week during the time they are away from work.

The new laws were announced at the end of last year after leading companies such as Facebook made maternity leaves available for their male employees. The new law now means fathers will have a similar maternity benefit that mothers currently receive.
