New statistics show there are far more women teaching in Ireland than men

According to latest statistics published by Eurostat the Republic of Ireland has far more female school teachers than males.

The figures which were released to mark ‘World Teachers’ Day’ show that a staggering 87% of Irish primary school teachers are female, whilst the figures for secondary schools show 71% of teachers are women.

The latest findings has led to Ruth Deasy of the EU Commission to say that teaching in Ireland is now considered a female profession. Ms Deasy said: “Teaching in Ireland is still very much a female profession with the vast majority of primary school teachers – 87% being women and 71% at secondary level – this puts us a little over the EU average.”

“Irish teachers are some of the youngest in Europe, with just 22% over 50, compared to Italy which has more than half of it’s teachers over 50 at primary school level.”
