There were newborn babies in Westminster parliament this week when female politicians returned or were received for the first time after the general election. Labour MP Stella Creasy and Conservative MP Kemi Badenoch were sworn in to parliament while carrying their newborns.
Conservative Secretary of Education Kemi held the King James Bible in her hand while her daughter was strapped to her body, while Stella’s daughter Hettie was also kept in a sling while visiting the bedroom.
The two mothers are on maternity leave, but they had to appear in Westminster in person to swear or solemnly declare their loyalty to the Crown. Until an oath or confirmation is taken, a member cannot receive a salary, take up their seat, speak, or vote in debates.
