Ireland will have a new political party as former Sinn Fein TD Peadar Toibin, has announced the name of his new party which will contest council elections both in the Republic and Northern Ireland.
Mr Toibin who left Sinn Fein last year after the party refused him a free vote in last May’s abortion referendum, confirmed at a special meeting in Belfast, that the name of his party will be Aontú.
In an announcement Mr Toibin, said that he had chosen Belfast as the city for the announcement as history showed that it was a place were political leaders fought for an Independent and pluralist Ireland for both Catholics and protestants.
Mr Toibin also revealed that his party’s name means unity and consent and his main goal was to create a new vision for Ireland.
The former Sinn Fein TD, has also previously stated that his new party will address key issues that affect real people everyday.
