Night of tension in Ballymena again as police have a confrontation with protesters after two migrants charged with assaulting young girl

Police in Northern Ireland responded to a second night of unrest in Ballymena, Co Antrim, deploying water cannons and firing baton rounds against rioters.

The public was urged to avoid the Clonavon Terrace area, where rioting occurred the previous night. Riot police were on the scene, and PSNI vehicles barricaded some roads as hundreds gather in the town.

Monday night’s disorder injured 15 officers, led to one arrest, and caused significant damage, including smashed windows and doors at homes and businesses, and fire damage to four houses, with three residents evacuated.

A 29-yr-old man has been charged with disorderly behaviour, attempted criminal damage, and resisting police, and will appear in Ballymena Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

The violence followed a protest in Ballymena town centre over an alleged sexual assault, with two migrants charged with attempted rape.

Some masked individuals from the vigil built barricades and attacked properties, with police investigating these as racially motivated hate crimes.
