No time to debate: Government to oppose EU plans to end daylight savings time

The Government have confirmed that it is to oppose the EU’s plan to end daylight savings time.

It is understood that the Government have decided to oppose the changes as the prospect of two different time zones on the island of Ireland is a possibility.

Speaking about the Government’s opposition to the plan, the Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan said that although he acknowledges the EU’s request to end the practice it isn’t a straightforward issue here.

Flanagan who also said that he is to discuss the matter with the EU parliament, stated that the prospect of two different time zones on the island of Ireland could potentially cause problems in both sides of the border.

It is understood Minister Flanagan’s comments come after the UK previously revealed that it will not introduce the changes, but will instead stick with changing the clocks twice a year.

The Justice Minister revealed that the Government’s decision comes following consultation with all departments and the public.
