Northern Ireland’s civic leaders call for end to violent disorder

Following three nights of violent disturbance in Belfast, civic leaders, churches, trade unions, and businesses have called for an end to the riots, reports Breaking News.

Following anti-immigration demonstrations in the city, violence broke out in south Belfast.

Businesses owned by members of ethnic minorities were set on fire, and police and members of the public were attacked.

In advance of the Assembly being recalled, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions will demonstrate against the demonstrations on Thursday in front of the Parliament Buildings in Stormont, reports Breaking News.

Political leaders need to take more action, according to Geraldine McGahey, chief commissioner of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland, even though she applauded the Assembly recall.

“We need a concerted response across society with clear direction, commitment, and action to eradicate racism,” the speaker declared.

Racial equality and the fight against racism in Northern Ireland can only be realised with strong government support and leadership.

“We applaud the Assembly recall; yet, as in other cases, it is insufficient to just discuss the matter,” reports Breaking News.

Rev. Trevor Gribben, general secretary of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland and clerk of the General Assembly, stated that they support demands to put a stop to the demonstrations and violence.

While justifiable protests against the underinvestment and absence of social housing might be justified, he claimed that a large portion of recent events have been “neither legitimate nor lawful.”

He remarked, “In actuality, there hasn’t been any protest; instead, we’ve seen wanton, racist, and violent acts that have no place in a civilised society,” reports Breaking News.
