At 114 pupils, the number of those accused of cheating in this year’s Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied has nearly doubled, reports Breaking News.
This comes after the State Examinations Commission (SEC) disclosed that the SEC has permanently withheld the results of 71 Leaving Cert students who were discovered to have cheated on the state examinations this year.
Along with the 71 exam results from the Leaving Cert/Leaving Cert Applied permanently withheld, the SEC has confirmed that it has provisionally withheld 43 additional Leaving Cert results, on a non-prejudice basis, pending further correspondence with the relevant schools and candidates. These new figures released by the SEC support this claim, reports Breaking News.
A spokeswoman for the SEC said on Friday: “The SEC would strongly caution any student that might be tempted to cheat that serious consequences can result.”
She said: “They could lose marks or the full result in a subject; they could lose the results of the entire examination; or they could be debarred from entering for any of the State examinations for a specified period,” reports Breaking News.
The total number of 114 is a 90% increase over the 60 students who were suspected of cheating at this time last year in the Leaving Cert. Of those 60, 39 had their exam results permanently withheld, and the remaining 21 had their results withheld without prejudice pending further correspondence with the schools and candidates.
“This includes full results withheld, or marks withheld, from candidates found to be in breach of the SEC’s examinations regulations,” an SEC spokeswoman stated of the 71 exam results that were permanently withheld. It is possible to appeal a decision to withhold a grade or result,” reports Breaking News.
Of the 60,839 students, just 114 were discovered to have violated or were suspected of violating SEC exam requirements this year.
The SEC spokeswoman explained: “The most common penalty applied is the withholding of the result in the subject in question. Where a more serious breach of the regulations occurs such as copying in more than one subject, withholding of all results and/or debarring from repeating the examination may be applied,” reports Breaking News.
