O’Callaghan delighted as 390 new safety camera zones will be rolled out in 2026

A total of 390 new safety camera zones will come into operation on New Year’s Day.

Of these, 55 are designated as “community request zones”, identified as areas of concern by local communities or gardaí, reports Breaking News.

They will be added to the more than 1,500 zones already in place, which gardaí say are intended to cut down on speed-related collisions and help save lives.

So far in 2025, there have been 186 road deaths, the highest number recorded on Irish roads in more than a decade, reports Breaking News.

Safety cameras are deployed in locations where there is a history of collisions linked to speeding, known as speed enforcement zones.

All zones are published on the Garda website and are also available for GPS navigation providers to download, reports Breaking News.

Sites are chosen following an analysis of Garda data gathered from fatal, serious and minor road traffic collisions, as well as further consideration of locations flagged as concerns by local communities through Garda community engagement.

There will be 35 new safety cameras installed in Dublin, along with 30 in Cork and 26 in Donegal, reports Breaking News.

A further 23 new cameras will be introduced in Tipperary.

An additional 21 safety cameras will be installed in Wexford, reports Breaking News.

Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne, Roads Policing and Community Engagement said:
“The majority of drivers on Irish roads obey the speed limits, keeping themselves, their passengers and other road users safer. There is a small persistent cohort of selfish, dangerous drivers who choose to drive in excess of the posted speed limit. These drivers put themselves and members of their community at risk, particularly children, older people, cyclists and other motorists,” reports Breaking News.
