There’s been online outrage at the fact that Fianna Fail’s Micheal Martin is about to become the new Taoiseach of Ireland even though he was only elected on the sixth count.
The more things change, the more they stay the same, in Ireland at least, as Fianna Fail and Fine Gael appear set to maintain their almost centenary chokehold on power, propped up by the Green Party this time around.
Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin is on course to become Taoiseach first, as part of a ‘rotating Taoiseach’ agreement that will see the three top men (Martin, Varadkar, and Ryan) getting a go every few months.
Sinn Fein did win the popular vote in the last election, but were unable to cobble together the 80 seats required to form a Government.
