Opinion: Justice gets served but those found guilty of murder should be imprisoned for the rest of their lives

Ana Kriegal was born in Siberia, in Eastern Russia in 2004. She was adopted at the age of two and a half and arrived in Ireland in August 2006.

She grew up as part of a loving family in Co Kildare with her Irish mother and French father. She celebrated two special days every year, her birthday in February and her adoption day in August.

Ana loved the outdoors, was tall, strong and an incredible swimmer and she loved to sing and dance.

Tragically all those wonderful talents were stolen from her when two 14-yr-old boys acted out in pure evil and murdered this lovely young girl.

Ana craved friendship, just plain old friendship – something that most of us take for granted when we see names popping in and out of our whatsapp or Facebook messenger.

This beautiful soul was viciously and sadistically taken advantage of by two evil thugs who “cannot be named for legal reasons” – what absolute nonsense! They murdered this young girl and not only their name but their face should be plastered across every single news publication in the land.

They took Ana from this world, from her parents, from her potential yet they’ll more than likely be given the best psychologists in the country to “rehabilitate” them to lead a normal life and “adjust” back into society.

For once, at least to me, the justice system got the right verdict in this case but will the sentence match? Absolutely not.

When someone is found guilty of murder, I believe it should mean a life for a life – we can have a debate about capital punishment another day, but in this instance, these two evil murders should be incarcerated literally for the rest of their lives. If they live to be 90, they’ll have 76 years in State prison – now THAT is a sentence worthy of this most evil crime.

Why should Ana’s life be ended at such a young age and these two murderers be allowed enjoy everything that the world has to offer after 6, 8 or 10 years in a plush rehabilitation facility?

Life should literally mean life.

RIP Ana Kriegal
