Outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar torpedoes Micheal Martin’s fever dreams of a grand coalition by saying that Fine Gael is headed for opposition

Outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has torpedoed Micheal Martin’s fever dreams of a grand coalition by firmly saying that Fine Gael is headed for the opposition side.

Micheal Martin had been salivating at the idea of finally getting his hands on the coveted Taoiseach baton and lead a grand coalition of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, and possibly the Green Party, with the goal of keeping Sinn Fein away from power.

But Leo Varadkar would face an internal revolt among TDs and senators if the coalition came to pass, as there are strong feelings against it within the declining Fine Gael party.

Sinn Fein, the de facto winners of the recent election, is still struggling to form a fully left-leaning government.

The drama continues.
