Outrage among houseboat occupants at the news that they face an annual cost hike of around €7000

A houseboat occupant on Dublin’s Grand Canal Dock has described a proposed annual cost hike of about €7,000 as “wholly unjust and unfair,” reports the Irish Independent.

Should Waterways Ireland’s proposed permission rises go through, houseboat owners might not be able to stay afloat.

Grand Canal Dock tenants were concerned that their annual permission fees would increase from €578 to €4,000 at first, and then to €7,500 after six years, reports the Irish Independent.

Three-year Grand Canal Dock resident David Blacoe asserted that he and other houseboat occupants are “being pushed out of the area through an exorbitant increase in fees that is not affordable or realistic.”

The community of over 40 people, including very elderly members, families with children, and everyone in between, who were founded more than ten years ago, will be at “immediate risk” if it proceeds, reports the Irish Independent.
