The Residential Tenancies Board received more than 7,000 notices of termination in the first quarter of 2026, the highest quarterly figure ever recorded since the data series began.
New figures from the RTB showed that 7,062 notices of termination were issued in Q1 2026, representing a 51% increase on the same period in 2025, reports Breaking News.
January saw 1,998 notices issued, February saw a sharp spike to 3,138, and March recorded 1,926.
The surge in February came immediately before the introduction of new rental rules on 31 March, which granted tenants who had been renting for more than six months the right to remain in their property for a minimum of six years, reports Breaking News.
Some 4,259 notices, or 60% of the total, were issued on the grounds that the landlord intended to sell the property.
RTB director Rosemary Steen said the board remains attentive to the pressure reflected in the figures, but noted there are indications that termination notices are now on a downward trend following the notable peak in February, reports Breaking News.
Registered private and cost rental tenancies rose by 2.4% year-on-year to 246,477 in Q1 2026, itself the highest level since the data series began. Of these, 5,226 were cost rental tenancies, up 87% year-on-year.
The number of private landlords increased by 1.3% annually to 105,847, which the RTB said indicated increased participation in the rental market, reports Breaking News.
