Pakistan heatwave kills nearly 700 people and causes thousands to be hospitalised

The number of people that have lost their lives from a 3 day heatwave in Southern Pakistan has reached 692.

Medics are battling to treat victims after a state of emergency was declared in hospitals. Doctors say most who have died have succumbed to heatstroke.

The beds in Karachi’s biggest public hospitals are full and more than 200 people there are dying of dehydration and heat exhaustion.

The government have called in the army to help with tackling the heatstroke.

Temperatures in Karachi hit 43C on Sunday and 49C in the south western city of Turbat. During which is the hottest time of year in Pakistan, the Islamic fasting month Ramadan began on Friday, in which devout Muslims abstain from food and drink during daylight.

Hundreds of mainly poor people die at the height of summer every year in India.

This years toll was the second highest in the country’s history.
