Egyptair Flight 804 has gone missing while flying over the Mediterranean Sea.
The plane, an Airbus A320 with 66 souls on board, departed Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport late last night, bound for Cairo. Its last communication took place at 3.26am local time, when the pilot spoke briefly to Greek traffic controllers as the plane was about to enter Egyptian airspace. No problems were reported at that time. All communication was lost three minutes later.
There are some conflicting reports about a distress signal that may have been sent from the vicinity of the area where contact was lost with the flight, though this is as of yet unconfirmed.
The plane is thought to have crashed into the sea, and the distress signal may have automatically been sent by an emergency alert device that activates when in contact with water.
A seach and rescue operation has been launched.
Stay tuned for updates.
