PC City: US city votes to remove gender specific terms such as ‘manhole’ from its council codes

The US city of Berkeley, in California, has moved to remove gender specific terms such as manhole and chairman from its city codes.

According to CNN, the city will no longer use terms that refers to gender preference as it looks to become a gender neutral city.

In a vote passed earlier this week the city council introduced a new ordinance that will see non gender specific terms being introduced to public jobs and its municipal codes.

Under the new ordinance, words such as manpower, chairman and manhole will be replaced with words such as human effort, chairperson and maintenance hole.

In its report CNN say the new proposals were overwhelmingly passed without any objections.

Berkeley city officials say the new codes are being introduced to replace outdated codes which contains more masculine pronouns.

The city also voted to remove the words he and she which will see both being replaced with the word they in order to provide accurate representation for non-binary individuals.
